Pre-Election

  • Establish nominating committee as per bylaws.
  • Typically, the nominating committee will solicit candidates, ensure eligibility, and preside over the nominations and elections.
  • Notify principal and all PA/PTA members of date and time of election.
  • Notice to principal should be by April 1.
  • Notice to general membership must be at least 10 days in advance.

Election

  • Elections must be held by the last day of school.
  • Elections must be held at school.
  • Officer Positions -- mandatory officers: President, Treasurer, Secretary
  • Typical Additions: Vice President(s), Fundraising Officer(s), Corresponding Secretary
  • Other Possibilities include Kindergarten Rep, Asst. Treasurer, Specific VP Titles
  • Election Meeting -- run by the nominating committee.
  • Requires quorum.
  • Committee must verify voter eligibility. DOE recommends parents sign in and staff verify against approved list.
  • Nominees must be taken from the floor.
  • Election Meeting – Uncontested Offices
  • Member must make motion for secretary to cast vote to elect candidate(s).
  • Membership votes to approve motion and result of motion entered into minutes.
  • Election Meeting – Contested Offices
  • Use paper ballots. (Only eligible voters receive ballots.)
  • Ballot box should be in clear view.
  • Once voting is complete, 3 volunteers needed to tally ballots in view.
  • Announce results and include in minutes.

Post-Election

  • Election Certification Form must be completed and a copy submitted to principal (original should be maintained by PA/PTA).
  • SLT elections must occur after PA/PTA elections are complete.
