The DOE encourages schools to create a School Wellness Council and awards grants at the start of the school year to K-12 schools to start a Council or strengthen the work of an existing one. A Wellness Council is an advisory group of students, school staff, parents and community members interested in setting a wellness agenda for the school through programs, policies, and support. In addition to funding, grant schools receive technical assistance, professional development, networking opportunities, resources, and incentives. Grantees have used the funds, which range from $1,000 – $2,500, for programs that support fitness, cooking and nutrition classes, and physical education equipment.
