The Road to Better Busing: What Is the School Bus Contract Dilemma?
For too many students- especially those with disabilities, in temporary housing, or in foster care- inconsistent bus service creates unnecessary barriers to accessing education. While the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) can and must take steps to improve bus service now, many of the changes needed will require the City to renew its sorely outdated bus contracts.
It is essential for the State to enact legislation A.8440/S.1018, allowing NYC to include Employee Protection Provisions in rebid bus contracts and for the City to move forward with new bus contracts that ensure students receive the reliable, safe, and efficient transportation they deserve. As community members, advocates, students, and parents, how can we work towards dismantling these barriers that isolate so many marginalized students? Read below to find out!
Then TAKE ACTION by signing on to The Road for Better Busing Letter to support legislative changes to improve student transportation in NYC.
